Keep the following original documents in a safe and secure location, and copies in a waterproof, fire resistant container that you can access in an emergency, where electronic copies may not be available. These documents should help with identifying and finding family members, contacting family/friends, assisting in medical care, and/or assisting with the recovery phase of a major disaster.
The following is a suggested list of important documents:
- Will/Trust
- Medical Directive
- Insurance policies – copy of the cover page with the account number
- Deeds
- Contracts
- Stocks & bonds
- Passports
- Immigration and or naturalization documents
- Social security cards
- Bank account numbers
- Credit card numbers
- Inventory of valuable household goods
- Important telephone numbers
- Your family records – birth, marriage, death certificates
- Your personal records – birth, marriage, divorce, military, etc.
- Photos of family living in your house
- Special certifications or licenses – EMT, paramedic, amateur radio, aviation, marine, weapons permits, etc.
